Classroom Update
Math - In math this week, we continued reviewing place value up to and including the ten thousands place. We continued to practise skip counting by 2,3,4,5,10 and also started to skip count backwards. During math warm-ups we have been working on telling time on analog clocks, completing algebra questions and playing games with money.
Home Practise: It would be great to review addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers. For example 84 + 49 or 93 - 27. A few questions after school to solidify understanding will support the students when we start using larger numbers.
Language Arts - Word Work continued to focus on building and understanding compound words. In writing, we continued with paragraph writing. Students wrote a 5 (or more) sentence paragraph about Orange Shirt Day.
Science - We finished our work about how we each use the land and we continued to talk about some of the amazing places we have visited in Alberta. Our first science unit is called Earth Systems and one of the things we focus on is landscape features like mountains, rivers, hills, hoodoos, lakes, grasslands, deserts etc. Students started to show their understanding of each feature by creating a map legend.
Social Studies - Students started focusing on the map of Alberta and what regions our province is split into. They started talking about the Boreal Forest, Parkland, Grassland, Rocky Mountains, Foothills and Canadian Shield. They also looked at the map and figured out where major Alberta towns / cities and lakes / rivers are.
