Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Classroom Update

Math -  We continued reading and interpreting graphs this week.  We reviewed expanded notation, figured out a multi-step word problem and completed some St. Patrick's Day math activities.

Home Practise:   Students can work on multiplication and division facts to increase speed and accuracy.  They are encouraged to quickly review some that they already know and spend more time with facts they find more challenging.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "super".  In reading and writing, we worked on researching our insects and the benefits they provide.  We then used cursive writing to share what we had learned.

Science - We continued to focus on simple machines.  On Monday we built leprechaun traps and had to use three simple machines in the creation.  We then continued to research the 6 simple machines (lever, incline plane, screw, wheel and axle, wedge and pulley).

Social Studies - This week we focused on all of the sources of power we have (oil, gas, wind, sun, hydro, geothermal, biomass)  Students chose one of the power generating sources and were asked to invent a machine that could do something.

Classroom Update

Math -  We started reading and interpreting graphs this week.  We also continued to focus was on learning how to approach and complete a multi-step problem and worked on figuring out numbers when we have to equalize two sides of a balance.

Home Practise:   Students can work on multiplication and division facts to increase speed and accuracy.  They are encouraged to quickly review some that they already know and spend more time with facts they find more challenging.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "sub".  In writing we finished our stories or character paragraphs that we are excited to share at parent / teacher conferences.

Science - We continued with the Energy unit in science this week.  We focused on simple machines.  We started researching levers, wheel and axles, wedges, incline planes, screws, and pulleys and recognizing where we see them and use them in our daily life.  We are also going to be building leprechaun traps on Monday so it is important that all students remember their recycled materials.

Social Studies - We continued to look at Alberta's resources.  Alberta is a very special place that has an abundance of natural resources like oil, natural gas, sun, wind, forests.

*During Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, we invite families to place a colourful push pin on our world map located in our Learning Commons to show where their family comes from. Together, we’ll create a vibrant picture celebrating the diverse backgrounds that make up our school community!*

 Classroom Update

Math -  This week our focus was on learning how to approach and complete a multi-step problem.  During problem solving, it is important that we can figure out whether we have to add, subtract, multiply or divide.  We also did a little more work with number patterns and reading analog clocks.

Home Practise:   Students can work on multiplication and division facts to increase speed and accuracy.  They are encouraged to quickly review some that they already know and spend more time with facts they find more challenging.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "non".  In writing we chose whether we would like to write a story or character paragraphs to share at parent / teacher conferences.  We planned and started our writing and will finish it up next week.

Science - We continued with the Energy unit in science this week.  We continued to discuss applied, elastic, friction, and tension forces (contact forces).  We then started to transfer our knowledge to simple machines.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be studying and building the following simple machines: levers, wheel and axles, wedges, incline planes, screws, and pulleys.

Social Studies - We continued to look at Alberta's resources.  Alberta is a very special place that has an abundance of natural resources like oil, natural gas, sun, wind, forests.
