Classroom Update

Math -  Patterns continued to be the focus this week in math.  We mainly worked with increasing and decreasing number patterns.  We worked on figuring out the "rule" for the pattern and then continuing the pattern to the 10th term.

Home Practise:   Students can work on multiplication and division facts to increase speed and accuracy.  They are encouraged to quickly review some that they already know and spend more time with facts they find more challenging.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "in".  We continued reading the novel "Mystery of Disaster Island" and started focusing on what we already know about the characters and important hints about what the "mystery" could be.  In writing, we focused on adjectives and adverbs and how we can use them to make our writing more interesting.

Science - We continued with the Energy unit in science this week.  We talked and explored how push/pull forces are part of everything and we started looking more closely at contact vs non-contact forces.  Students explored elastic and friction forces (contact forces) and observed gravity and magnetic forces (non-contact).

Social Studies - We started to look at Alberta's resources.  Alberta is a very special place that has an abundance of natural resources like oil, natural gas, sun, wind, forests.

Classroom Update

Math -  Patterns were the focus this week in math.  We mainly worked with picture patterns but also worked with number patterns.  The first pattern focus in grade 3 is on increasing and decreasing patterns.  We also started to figure out the following:  if you are given the first 3 terms of a pattern, what would the 5th term be? What would the 10th term be?

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "dis".  In words like disconnect and disapprove, the "dis" prefix changes the meaning of the root word.  We started reading a new novel this week called "Mystery of Disaster Island".  We also wrote a "would you rather" paragraph.  Students had to give and defend their choice.  

Science - We started the Energy unit in science this week.  We began our unit by talking about the forces of push and pull.  We completed a couple of activities that helped us understand that we can describe push and pull scientifically by the amount of force being used.

Classroom Update

Math -  We continued to work on finding the perimeter of objects.  This week we even learned how to find missing side measurements as well as perimeter.  We also finished up measuring items using metric measurements like cm and mm and imperial measurements like inches and feet.

Home Practise:   Students can work on multiplication and division facts to increase speed and accuracy.  They are encouraged to quickly review some that they already know and spend more time with facts they find more challenging.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "re".  In words like replay and reread, the "re" prefix changes the meaning of the root word.  We finished reading Ollie's Odyssey and the students finished writing their own "odyssey".  

Science and Social Studies  - We finished our robotics project this week.  We focused on programming the robot to travel on a map of Alberta (a map taped on the floor in the hallway).  On days we didn't have the robots, we focused on the many Indigenous nations that live in Alberta and discussed the various languages that exist in Alberta and in our classroom.

 Classroom Update

Math -  Our focus this week continued to be measurement.  We mostly worked on finding the perimeter of rooms and objects and on understanding that if we know one side of a square or two sides of a rectangle, we can figure out the perimeter of the object.  We also added imperial measurement (inches and feet) as an alternative to metric measurement and talked about times that we may still come across imperial measurement.

Language Arts - During word work this week, we focused on words with the prefix "un".  In words like unhappy, unhealthy and unbelievable, the "un" prefix changes the meaning of the root word.  We continued reading Ollie's Odyssey and the students started writing their own "odyssey".  Some students have decided their main character is one of our Dash robots and others have chosen their favourite stuffed animal.
